Program Safety

As the safety of our participants is our utmost concern, our staff maintains regular contact with participants and is available to support them if needed. We make regular visits to exchange hosts and employers during the summer to ensure things are running smooth. We also see students several times a week at activities which allows staff to gauge how participants are doing and provide additional support if needed.

We also use a comprehensive selection process to screen exchange hosts. We ask for applicant’s patience as these strict selection criteria and processes can take time to complete. This process will begin in April once our staff team has been trained. If your area is a participating community, a local staff will contact you at that time. The YMCA will ask all host locations to agree to the following as part of our selection process:

  • An in-home interview which includes a tour of the house and all adult family members present.
  • You will be asked to provide three references of which at least two will be called.
  • To consent to a security check by our programs’ security consulting firm.
